Back To School Family Fun Day II

Over two hundred of youth and adults attended Saturday’s 2nd annual Back To School Family Fun Day at Southside Park. Southwest Arkansas Community Development Corporation and Mo Cutz Barber & Beauty Shop sponsored this event.

Hundreds of backpacks and a huge amount of school supplies were handed out.
Youth not only received backpacks and school supplies, but also heard a motivational segment provided by Gwenzetta Bradford of SAU Talent Search Program. Ms. Bradford stated that going to college should be a focus for everyone present. She provided youth and adults with information regarding the talent search program and making the right decisions. The Columbia County Library afforded the opportunity for parents to sign their children up for library cards.

SWACDC’S Tobacco Prevention and Information Program provided a display with information and promotional items, relating to the dangers and effects of tobacco use. A newly formed youth led advocacy group made their first appearance. The name of the group is KIDS GET 2 MAD (Kids In Different Spectrums, Getting Everyone Together To Make A Difference) and is composed of teenagers taking on leadership roles and making a difference in the communities in which they live. Spokesperson for the group was My’Eisha Watson; spoke to the youth on the purpose of their group and how they too are needed to help accomplish the goals and objectives of the program. Other members provided the audience with a dance step relating to alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The group also provided a registration table for other teenagers to become members of their group. Approximately 5 new members have been added, with more to come.

Youth also participated in activities such as sack races, tug-o-war, bingo, duck games, and touch football. Several adults took the opportunity to enjoy the day by taking part in a domino tournament. The domino tournament champions were Pastor of St. Luke Baptist Church, Rev. Tony Smith and Pastor of Free Union Missionary Baptist Church, Pastor Charles Hughey.

Many prizes were given away to those who held the lucky tickets. D.J. Johnny Brewer provided entertainment for the evening. Food was provided for everyone who attended, courtesy of Mr. Eddie Gooden of South Arkansas Youth Services. Several businesses and individuals donated items to make this event a success.
